How Hong Kong secondary allocation works
This is the Hong Kong government's system. The timeline is set each year, so check the current EDB leaflet.
Discretionary Places
Schools can reserve up to 30% of their S1 places for direct admission. Students can apply to no more than two participating schools, in any district. Schools may interview applicants but cannot hold written tests.
Central Allocation
Places left after discretionary places are shared out centrally. 10% are for unrestricted choices (up to three schools from any net) and 90% for restricted choices (up to 30 schools in the student's own net).
What counts
Internal assessment results from the end of Primary 5 and from mid-year and the end of Primary 6 are standardised and scaled, then students are grouped into bands.
How we help
- Reading each school's steps
Each school sets its own admission steps, such as tests, interviews and documents. We help you make sense of them.
- Interview preparation
Practice for P1, secondary and international school interviews. See the Interview Prep page.
Our promise
The school decides who is admitted. We help you prepare and never promise an outcome.
