The three young learner exams

Each level includes everything below it. This describes what the level expects, not a syllabus we promise to finish by a date.

  • Pre A1 Starters

The first exam. The level expects present simple and continuous, can for ability, have got, basic prepositions and pronouns.

  • A1 Movers

Adds past simple, verb plus infinitive, verb plus -ing, must, comparatives and superlatives, and relative clauses.

  • A2 Flyers

Adds past continuous, present perfect, be going to, will, might, could, should, tag questions and conditionals. Children write an original story of at least 20 words from three pictures, and ask the examiner questions in the Speaking test.

How results are reported

  • No pass or fail

Every child receives a Cambridge certificate.

  • Shields, not a score

Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking are reported separately, so you see exactly where your child is strong.

  • Four or five shields

In a skill, this is Cambridge's own signal that the child is ready for the next level.

After Flyers: the KET to PET route

A diagnostic sets the starting point. A strong foundation means a faster pace, and every phase ends with a mock-exam checkpoint.

  1. 1 · Diagnostic and bridge

A KET-format diagnostic, everyday A2 vocabulary, a grammar bridge on tenses and comparatives, and KET task types such as notices, signs and messages.

  2. 2 · KET skill-building

All seven Reading and Writing part types, strategy training for the five Listening part types, and Speaking photo talk and partner tasks.

  3. 3 · KET exam readiness

Timed mock exams on all three papers, error review, a mock interview with two teachers, and a parent briefing on registration and exam day.

  4. 4 · PET foundation bridge

Grammar step-up (perfect tenses, conditionals, passive), longer texts at a faster pace, and writing emails and short stories of about 100 words.

  5. 5 · PET exam readiness

Timed mock exams on all four papers, Speaking collaborative tasks and discussion, and a final past-paper revision cycle.

KET and PET at a glance

  • KET (A2 Key)

CEFR A2. Three papers: Reading and Writing, Listening, Speaking.

  • PET (B1 Preliminary)

CEFR B1. Four papers: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking.

  • After PET

B2 First is the next Cambridge milestone, or your child can consolidate at B1.

Common questions

Is there an official age for each exam?

No. Cambridge publishes no official age range and no minimum age.

Paper or computer?

Both are available. The Speaking test is always face to face with a trained examiner.

Does the exam fee come with the class?

No. The entry fee is separate and set by Cambridge. We can register your child, and we confirm dates and details with you first.
